The YZ250 Trail Bike?
Well, did you see Dirt Bike magazine this month? How about that, it looked like my bike on the cover! People have been making fun of me since 2008 when I first started running a trials tire on my YZ 250 2-stroke with it’s 18″ rear wheel but 3 years later, there is one on a major magazine cover. Then to top it all off, there are three separate articles about YZ 250s in that particular issue. Helps to validate what I’ve know for a few years now.
First of all, I must say that I really miss my old WR450 in many instances. Not so much from a racing perspective but more from a trail cutting and cruising around angle. However, when it comes to technical trail riding or off-road racing, the YZ250 is my current favorite.
The YZ is extremely lightweight, starts easily, is cheap to maintain, and has gobs of power right where you need it. Mine is setup a bit oddly, but the changes I’ve made suit my riding style. My preference is to have a low geared bike that is ridden in the highest gear possible. I shift a lot, use 2nd, 3rd, and 4th all the time and can use 1st gear to get through the rough stuff when other folks are burning up their clutches. Having a huge 15 oz. flywheel weight coupled with 14/52 gearing makes for a bike that is great for technical trail riding and tight woods racing. It does top out pretty fast in the open areas, but it goes as fast I need to go these days.
Many of the mods they suggest in the articles are intact on my YZs and have proven themselves time and time again. One thing none of them tried was the FMF Q-Stealth. It really helps the bike down low and compliments the FMF Gnarly Pipe really well. Additionally, I love my PMB kick stand and my new fuel petcock with reserve.

Of course the magic upgrade is the 18″ wheel with the trials tire. If you haven’t tried one yet, you don’t know what you are missing. It may look a bit odd, but ask anyone who’s tried one and they’ll swear by them for most situations. When I’m not running the Michelin trials tire, an IRC VE-33 is mounted on the rim and stuffed with Tire Balls. I use that tire in the winter when it is muddy and sometimes during the Spring and Fall. Otherwise, you’ll find a trials tire on my rear wheel.
Most folks wouldn’t event think to use the YZ for what I do, so it was nice to see the magazine articles. Maybe it will open some peoples eyes a bit . . . long live the 250cc 2-stroke!!
