Idaho Ride Day 1

I am fortunate to get to come out to Idaho and ride! It is an incredible experience that folks from back East just can’t relate to in any way. This year is a bit special in that I’m finally getting to ride with the person who set me up to ride out here in the first place and on top of that, there are some very generous folks that either live or visit out here each year and they have proven to be the best of hosts.

A good crew was together for a Saturday ride but the weather forecast called for 95 degrees and a 20% chance of showers. The good part was that we got the showers and the overcast skies all day which really kept the temperatures down for the outing.

I made the mistake of following our host for the day and a friend from back East up his personal little single-track trail up the mountain. The other option was to ride up a jeep road to the top with the rest of the crew, but for some reason, I went for the more challenging route. The first climbs were not that bad, but we crested this sage brush covered area that ran perpendicular to the slope we’d been riding up. About 2-5 feet to the right was a big drop off . . . I mean 2-3 stories before you would hit something. It was level and about 10″ inches wide but sage brush was on each side. That stuff just gives me fits. Any one of us could ride 100 yards on a flat 10″ wide line, but doing with a huge drop off on one side makes it a bit of a mind game. I’m getting better at it, but will never be comfortable with it. The funny thing is that if there are trees on either side I’m more comfortable with the whole thing, once again . . . it is just a mind game.

So after getting all pumped up in the first 10 minutes we finally hit some trails with the rest of the group as they met us at the top of a rise. We started out in sage brush but climbed into some aspens with some grassy patches and then into some areas along creeks that were lined with low growing willows. There were some free range angus cattle running in some of these areas.

This terrain gave way to a climb through the conifers (pines, spruce, fir, . . . ) and up to some awesome alpine meadows. The trail weaved from side to side in such a way that the meadow was barely touched as we steadily climbed into the mountains. Kim would be envious as the wild flowers were abundant! There were places where every color you could imagine was on display.

All of a sudden I realized that, “I’ve been here before!” Jesse and I had ridden a portion of this trail in late June of 2010. But, at that time, there were 2-3 foot snow drifts between the trees and now the only snow to be seen was on the tallest peaks around the area. We rode for about 2 miles and then dropped over a ridge onto a trail that was truly snowbound last June.

A mile or so later we climb up to a little ridge and Wow, the view was awesome! Everyone got off their bikes and we took some time to enjoy the view, grab a snack, and chat a bit. Below is a picture of a lake we could see from the ridge.

The ride continued through some mountain meadows that were alive with colors and snaked in and out of large stands of pines and spruces. The views around every corner were amazing. I kept thinking of how fortunate I was to be here!

A little after 4pm the group decided it was a good time to head back to the truck. A couple of the guys took some dirt roads to make it a quick trip but we chose to take trails back that direction. An hour or so later we emerged in the hills above where we had parked and made our way back to base.

If you ever get the chance to go riding out West (especially Idaho), jump on it! You’ll need a trials tire, a very quite exhaust, and desire for an adventure!

Special Thanks to my hosts!

See you on the Trail!
