Sawmill Race Report
The Sawmill KORHS event down in Casey County was really good this year! The course was longer, had several new sections of single track and provided racers with plenty of opportunities to pass and rest. I really hate the fast field sections but Jesse and I have very few options when trying to use that property.
Feedback on the course has been positive. We had several racers approach us after the race to compliment Jesse and I on our work. Jim also posted a nice thread on the forum and Trey jumped in to lend his support as well. It is nice to be recognized and appreciated. KORHS would not exist if there weren’t good courses, plain and simple.
Actually, I really didn’t plan to race this past weekend, but I really wanted to ride the course we’d put so much time into. So, I did line up with the intention of just taking it easy and having a good time. It didn’t take long after the flag dropped for everyone in my class to get around me. Big Dave came around at about the half-mile mark and everyone else was already gassing ahead. I surely wasn’t going to hold anyone up, so I tried to get over fairly fast when someone came upon me quickly.
I had gotten really hot on Saturday before the race and wasn’t properly hydrated and on the third lap, I started getting some light leg cramps. Not good that early in the race. On the fourth lap it got worse and I decided to pull off the course when I went through scoring that time. Well, for some reason, I went right back out again and that was a mistake. The cramps started to intensify at about the 5 mile mark and for the first time ever, I got cramps in abs! It was very painful. I slowed way day, but kept moving, and made it around to scoring with a mild headache and upset stomach rearing their head. My mind is obviously younger than my body. Should have known better.
The result was sitting around for 45 minutes while Travis and Jesse loaded all my stuff. Warren had no issues with the results so I told David I was heading out for the day. Not a fun drive home at all. Ended up having the worst leg cramps in my life for about 45 minutes that evening. Absolutely miserable.

One good part of the day is that Mark was there from Lee’s will all his camera gear. He set up shop down in the creek bed and he has captured the most awesome race footage I’ve ever seen. Period! I’ve seen photos from all the great photographers that coverage motorcycle events, and Mark’s work is at the same level.
So, when I came down the creek bed on the first or second lap, Mark was there to capture a picture and it turned out to be just incredible! The detail and lighting just blow me away! I’ve posted it below so everyone can check it out. You’ll want to click on the photo in order to see it full size.
So, at the end of the day, all was good from a KORHS perspective. Registration and Scoring went flawlessly, everyone enjoyed the course, and no got hurt really bad at all. On top of all that, we’re going to have some awesome photos for the website.
See you on the trail!
