We were riding last week in the mountains of Idaho and decided to take a side trail that leads up to an old Forest Service lookout tower. One of the riders with me had never been up there and I had only done it once. The trail is very rocky, has some side hill exposure but ends with some cool (but tricky) switchbacks leading up to the tower. We parked our bikes a few switchbacks down from the top so as to not tear up the trail and began walking up.

As we climbed up the trail we heard some voices from the trail above. There were two hikers coming down the trail towards us so we waited for them to pass. Two older gentlemen greeted us and talked with us for a bit. Cecil (one of the guys riding with me) asked they guys how old they were. One spoke up and said, “I’m 71 years old and he’s 77.” Cecil responded and said, “We’ll you’re 3 years older than me and and you’re 3 years younger.” Cecil is 74 and the other guy riding with me, Chip, is 65.

So, here I am at 9,800+ feet on the side of a mountain with 4 guys old enough to be my father. Geez! Now I’m really impressed with the elders that are there with me. Two have just wrestled their bikes up some gnarly single track and two just hiked 5 miles up a mountain (2,500 elevation gain). Very, very impressive to say the least.

They two hikers headed down the mountain and we walked/climbed on up to the tower. It was recently refurbished but it was not inhabited last summer nor this year. We opened up the window covers and the same thing were in there as last year. This whole time, I kept thinking about the age of these gentlemen and what they were able to accomplish. I truly hope that I can do the types of things they are doing when I am that age. It is an honorable goal that we should all strive to achieve.
