A Fall Ride at Red Bird
I had the opportunity to ride the Red Bird Crest Trail the day after Thanksgiving this year. Bo, Philip, and Jesse bailed on me . . . they had different “priorities” and just couldn’t make it. Roger had called me and said that he and Cody were going down and that Ken was bringing “a couple” guys with him down from “Buckeye Land” to ride the Red Bird Crest Trail. Never a dull moment!
So I headed out early, evidently earlier than most, as I was at the Parking Area 25 minutes before anyone showed up. This gave me some time to get my bike out and arrange some riding gear for suiting up. The GPS got its signal and I got all my batteries and stuff in order for the ride.
Roger rolled in and shortly afterwards, Ken and his crew showed up. A “couple” had turned to five and I knew things would be slow for the day. I was ready before anyone else and as usual we got a late start. On top of all that, Roger led us up the big hill from the lot and I knew after the second rock ledge that the trials tire was NOT going to be good on the wet leaves. The rocks, roots, sand, and so forth were fine, but not the wet leaves. Not a good combination.
We were less than 5 miles into our 76 mile ride and we were stalled waiting on some of the guys. The trail was quad width and gently rolling at best, but the slick stuff and rocks were giving them fits. We rolled on down the trail and all of the riders made a point to blast by me leaving me to follow up the rear. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “No one likes to follow a rider with a trials tire.” So I cruised along watching them chase each other and wear themselves out. They didn’t get it . . . this was all about the long haul.

As we pushed on down the trail it was obvious that many of the larger logs that were down had been cut and removed. There was some small stuff here and there, but none of it was bothersome. I just hate all the mud holes from the quads. (There are no mud holes on the pure single track) We made a couple side ventures onto some old sections of the trail and the enduro course from the 90’s. From what I understand, the whole thing was single track for many years but then they opened it up for quad use and the rest is history. Only the Sections 16-22 have true single-track at this time.
We finally got to Collett’s Store but we skipped the whole section behind it. At that point, we were behind on time and I started to wonder if the whole crew would really make the entire loop. I got in the store quickly and ordered before most so I could fuel up my bike and get all my electronics in order (GPS, Camera, Helmet Camera). Lunch was a Deluxe Burger with all the toppings and as usual it was good. I’m surprised by what you can get at that place but it must be the only store within 15 miles.
We headed out again and I knew as soon as we hit the first east-facing hollow that dark was coming sooner than later. There is a fairly long rocky uphill not to far into the section after the store that gives some people fits. This is where the trials tire rocked! One of the Husaberg boys (the better of the bunch) was making it up just fine, but I could have passed him with the traction I was getting. It’s like cheating at times . . . just not on the wet leaves!
After getting through a couple sections we got the the power line cut (see photo below) that is about as far as you can get from where we parked. I grabbed a couple photos while I had the opportunity and then rolled onto the next turning point. I was thing the whole time, “It was getting late in the day.”
