3 in 1?
It’s been a few months, but I had seen a review for a Zac Speed Chest Protector, back pack, drinking system combo and was impressed with the 3 in 1 design. I need all those things all the time! Buying one of these never really came to mind though, because my old and beloved Moose Chest Protector (Circa 2004 – made by Acerbis) finally bit the dust on the return trip from Idaho. The plastic cracked on the front and back and despite my searches, I couldn’t find a replacement.
So, the search was on! Parts Unlimited nor Tucker Rocky carried the product so buying it online seemed to be the ticket. In the end, Bike Bandit had the best price and there was an AMA discount too! The one I chose was the Zac Speed Exotec SP-3 which has more storage, a bigger drink system, and a nice roll-up style tool bag. On top of it all, you can remove the entire front and shoulder pads and using the supplied straps, it turns into a back pack.
It is very comfortable and provides ample protection in all the right places. There are a set of straps that come up from the back and connect to chest protector just below your underarm. These, in addition to the two normal straps that run from front to back keep it comfortably in place.

Now, load it all up with some tools, spare gloves, spare batteries, and so forth. Then add the totally full drink system. When you pick it up you’ll say, “No way! That’s too heavy!” But considering the amount of water it carries, and all the tools and such, plus the weight of the chest protector and shoulder pads, it makes sense that it would be heavy. Grab your chest protector, a full drink system, and a partially loaded back pack in one hand and it bet it would be about the same. After hoisting it on and adjusting the straps the weight seemed to disappear. I rode all day at Red Bird with it on and it did very well. At the end of the day, I had more water than I could ever drink. Won’t fill it nearly as full next time.
The 3 in 1 concept works for me and it might for you as well. Check out their site and the version with less storage.
See you on the trail!
