The Red Bird Crest Trail

Well, Bo Shewmaker and I decided to hit the Red Bird Crest yesterday. We pulled in around 9:50 or so and no one was there at all. We unloaded and hit the trail around 10:15. We rode all the sections between the Peabody trailhead and KY406 and only stopped once. The pace had been steady and comfortable all morning. When we hit KY406 we turned right and headed down the road to the store. I started out with a little over two gallons but had some Bel Ray with me.

Bo’s bike, a 2007 YZ205f with a stock tank, held only .84 gallons at the store. I got 1.5 gallons of gas and poured my Bel Ray in the tank, shook it up really well, moved my bike out of the way and went in to order some lunch.

We each got Deluxe Burgers and Bo got a milkshake too. It was good to get some food as we’d covered about 35 miles and the energy from breakfast was gone! Mr. Collett, the owner of the store, talked with us a bit while we ate. He’d been around back when the Enduro was held down there and gave us the history on it all. What I didn’t realize was that much of the current trail was blazed for the race and he said the bikes are what burned it in. It wasn’t until afterwards that the Forest Service decided to “institutionalize” the trail and charge for its use. It was re-routed and widened for quads and that really changed everything from his perspective.

After finishing lunch we geared back up and hit the trail, but that didn’t last long as my bike blubbered out and died on the gravel road leading back to the trail. Bo said he knew something was wrong when I started shaking my head. I tried a couple times to restart it but it would only run with the choke on. I jumped off and looked at the fuel filter only to notice that it was full of premix!! Orange H1R appeared to be the only contents of the filter. We rummaged around and found a cup, disconnected the fuel line, turned the gas back on and let oil run out until it was gas. I dumped it all back in the tank and it did start up, but it wasn’t quite right. I laid it over on the ground and orange oil ran right out . . . not good, but it did start right back up and we were going once again. Lesson learned, mix the gas in something else and then pour it into your tank, or ride a four stroke.

The remaining 32+ miles was uneventful, but we did notice that the last sections had been ridden very little thus summer. It was all grown up in place and the trail was barely visible. The other side and the beginning sections are simply boring and all worn out. You can make good time, but I’d rather spend my time riding it backwards to the store and back. Those sections, except for the road part, are the best on the whole loop as far as I’m concerned. One thing I noted that even though no quads are allowed after Section 16, some had definitely been on the loop after that point. I assume they are coming in from the forest service road where you turn off to section 21.

Never saw a person all day, had a great time, and neither of us got hurt or broke down. When we got back to the truck there was no one else parked there . . .

See you on the trail!
