Racing with a Trials Tire

I’ve been afraid to race with a trials tire but today was the perfect opportunity. The KORHS event at Horseshoe Bend utilized the same course as this spring, but the circuit was run backwards. Jesse said it was really hard packed, but I didn’t realize what he meant until this morning. Essentially, every rut that was created at the first race was frozen in time as a rock hard surface that was not breaking down. To make matters worse, those ruts were setup for the course going the other direction. Thus, in many instances they were of no use at all from a berm perspective.

The hard dry surfaces are where the trials tire just simply railed! It stuck to the ground like glue and soaked up every rock and root with ease. The front end was coming up exiting corners and on hill climbs as traction was ever-present. Now what the tire did not like to do is brake slide into a corner, that gets you no where quick. It wants to smoothly ride each corner and it allows you to ride across an off camber surface where a knobby would want to kick out.

One thing I noticed is people don’t like to follow a racer with a trials tire. I was yelled at more today than anytime in recent history. I think racers would get close and see the tire and think, “Gosh, this guy can’t be serious!” At that point they had to get around me or it would hurt their pride or something.

I’d never use the tire in a muddy event, but for basic trail riding it is the ticket! If you have an 18″ wheel you should give it at try!
