Pineapple Improv Block

Several months ago I found a tutorial on the Modern Quilt Guild website (http://themodernquiltguild.wordpress.com/) for an Improv Pineapple Log Cabin block. I have always loved the log cabin block and all the variations you can create. A couple years ago I finished my Pineapple quilt with Civil War Reproduction fabrics and I love it. The blocks were created with a special ruler. I have always wanted to make another Pineapple quilt in bright fabrics, but didn’t love the technique I used in my first Pineapple quilt. I was so excited to find this new modern version; it looked quick, fun and liberated! The block construction includes strips, squares and triangles of fabrics.

The other thing that caught my eye was the choice of fabric used in the tutorial. It includes mostly solids and one print fabric. The print used happens to be one of my favorite fabrics from my favorite fabric designers, Denyse Schmidt. My very first quilt was made with fabrics from this line. I was so excited when she reprinted the line last year! Here is the print

Since I found the tutorial I have been collecting solids to go with my print. After a couple online orders I finally had my coordinating solids to go with my print. Here are they are:

I decided to try this method before starting on my next kit. I just couldn’t wait to try out this technique now that I have all my fabrics.

The blocks are so fun and easy to prepare for. The first Pineapple quilt I did took hours of cutting before you were ready to begin. In a half an hour or less I had parts cut out for 2 blocks and was ready to go.

And, here is my first Pineapple block:

Aren’t they fun? You should go try it!

The tutorial is very well done and easy to follow. Here is a link:

Also, check out the half log cabin variation in the tutorial. I have some ideas for that block too.

For now, I will put this block away to be pulled out again at a later date. I just had to get a couple under my belt and have a little change of pace.

Looks great! I want to try this technique. Sadly, my pineapple in civil war reproductions using the special ruler remains a UFO. Btw- look at you with all your solids! You go, girl!!
